Sundays Are All About Streaming Radio

May 3, 2012

by Amanda

One of my favorite times to listen to music is on a nice sunday morning or afternoon. The vibe is just perfect for it. I don’t know what it is about sundays. Perhaps feeling the same way, the internet radio world has blossomed in recent months to give people an uninterrupted day of roots and dub programming – something heretofore unheard-of in the roots and dub world. Listeners can tune in first thing in the morning, and just let it play all day if they choose.

Starting out the day is Steppin Up Dub Sundays on RootsLabIntl.com, which is an all-day set of programming starting at 8am NYC /1pm UK time, and continuing for 12 hours. Each week features a rotating set of selectors such as: I-Mitri Counteraction; Blackheart Warriors Hi-Fi; House of Dread; Instrument of Jah; Livity Int’l; Sniffa Ranks; Digikal Roots, and special guest selectors (If you would like to hear Taitu Records’ guest spot on Steppin Up Dub Sundays, click here). One can expect to hear roots reggae and UK dub nonstop, with a lively chat room and webcam lounge providing a social experience. It is not uncommon to get hooked into the action and spend an entire day listening and interacting.

I also like the morning-midday programming on Hitz 92 FM out of Jamaica, starting with Retro Sunday Spins. The sunday program progresses much as a Jamaican retro dance would – in segments. Usually when I tune in, they are playing “big people” music (i.e., ska / rocksteady), and then they move to some 70′s rockers, progressing to 80′s dancehall, and onto classic 90′s dancehall. It’s an enjoyable overview of classic hits from the various decades. Also, hearing local adverts and announcements is really fun –  giving me the flavor of Jamaica from 1,500 miles away.

Also on Sundays is the DubIt UK program on Linkuplive.org with Bag-e of Unique Sounds from 1-4pm NYC Time. A producer known for his work with Unique Sounds label, as well playing sessions in UK and abroad, Bag-e brings a blend of some of the best roots and dub selections to sunday’s delightful mix! And, new this week to the streaming airwaves is the Doctor Wax Radio Show with I-Lex (Supertone Records / Reggae on Top / Maestro / Jah Weatherman / Sankara Warriors). This is going to be a whole different type of show, because each record that you will hear is available for sale. Selector I-Lex is the webmaster for some of the veterans in the record business. So, he has access to many great shops, collectors and producers. Broadcasting from a different shop or location each week, he’ll be selecting from records for sale at that location. The first person to send a message through the chatbox will be able to purchase the records at a set price. For example, this week I-Lex will be raiding the vaults of Jah Weatherman – flinging down vintage rarities and unleashing some gems on the public. This is a brand new show scheduled to go from 12-3pm NYC time / 5pm UK at www.livestream.com/doctorwax , but as the locations change each week, there may be adjustments to scheduling. Join the Facebook group for Doctor Wax to stay in the loop.

From 8am NYC / 1pm UK to 8pm NYC / 8pm UK, the web has a full day of programming for all the roots and dub lovers out there – and those new to the genre as well! If you enjoy music on a sunday as much as I do, it’s perfect. Don’t forget you can take most of these shows with you in your car or on the go with your favorite mobile devices and smartphones. And, for those in the Brooklyn area, after a full day of streaming vibes, the party doesn’t have to stop. Do remember that Soul Beat Sundays is happening every sunday from 6pm-12am at the underground spot. You can read our review of the party here. It’s a great way to wrap up a great day full of great music.

Review: Soul Beat Sundays (+ photos)

It was a cold and rainy sunday in Brooklyn. The damp hung thick in the air, creating a heavy vibe throughout the day. I must say I was skeptical about whether folks would turnout for this first Soul Beat Sundays event. The weather was enough to make even the most passionate music lover seriously consider staying in – dry, warm and cozy. Furthermore, the event was held in an underground venue which one would need commitment to find. Nonetheless, I kept hope alive as I headed out into the torrential rain to check out this kickoff event.

The venue itself was the basement of a nondescript apartment building not far from Brooklyn’s soundclash headquarters, Albany Manor. One might feel trepidation approaching this basement entrance, as it was just an unmarked house like all the rest on the block. However, if you gathered the courage to open the door and walk in, you suddenly found yourself in a cool and spacious underground lounge and club. As you walk in the door, directly ahead is the DJ booth with graffitti art adorning the wall. To the left is a candlelit lounge area with tables, chairs, and a bar. To the right is a large dance floor. It was quite roomy and inviting.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6pm every sunday, but people began to filter in around 8pm or so, perhaps due to the weather. First in were the ladies, and then soundmen, collectors and friends began to trickle in – some prepared with bags of records. As Ras Tayo of Majestic Twinsound spun soul classics like “At Last” – Etta James, “Is It Because I’m Black” – Syl Johnson and “Ain’t No Sunshine” the venue took on a cool underground lounge vibe. Most people were gathered around the candlelit tables, socializing and enjoying their beverages. Conversations were easy to strike up with the friendly session-goers. Incense and ishens smoke created lovely visuals and scents in a scene that was taking on more and more ambiance with every dirty 45rpm that played on the wheels of steel. I felt transported to some hip and cool lounge in some other space and time.

Once the vibes were warm, selectress African Violet took to the control tower. She played a range of roots classics and rarities – displaying command of the genre. She kept a cool profile and handled the turntables with ease. People were gathered around the DJ booth, with Ras Tayo occasionally taking on mic duties to add even more vibes to the fire. As African Violet was nearing the end of her set, Persian Cat started thumbing through some 45′s, and stepped up to the control tower, MC in tow. Persian Cat brought his own party to the session, because as soon as he assumed the controls, and the MC took to the mic, it became a reggae session reminiscent of early sound system sessions. The MC was quite adept at the 70′s deejay style made popular by the likes of U-Roy and Big Youth. Persian Cat played mainly 70′s and 80′s reggae, and not long after Bobo Saw (Devon Clarke) graced the mic, singing in his 80′s digital style. Also gracing the mic was master of the punch, Taitu Records’ own Willow Wilson, singing some classics in fine style.

The vibes were lovely, and the entire underground lounge was enjoying the moment. With monday morning lurking just around the corner, people started to slowly filter out at about 11pm or so. To close out the night, Ras Tayo took to the 1′s and 2′s once more, playing a selection of mainly soul tunes, as well as some reggae, that he has for sale. Soul Beat Sundays is not only a session, but a meeting of 45 collectors and selectors. Tunes may be bought, sold, or traded on any given sunday, so a collector or selector may want to come prepared with tunes (or extra cash)  if they make the trip. Soul Beat Sundays continues next sunday with a special tribute to Studio One. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to call (718) 467-5515 or send a message to this email for location info.

Many thanks to everyone who has been supporting our high quality downloads. Due to the positive response, we’ve added 4 more EP’s to our selection of downloads . Available now as high quality MP3 or WAV download are tunes like “Go With Jah” by Daweh Congo, a heavy cross-over tune which gained recognition with such sounds as Stone Love and Channel One. Also available: the anthemic “Real Battle Axe” from the powerful voice of Mark Wonder, and the hit,”One Way” by Cologne, heard at Jah Shaka and Channel One dances. Owners of the vinyl will note the pressing anomaly on that side of the EP. Finally “One Way” is available to all in its original master form. Early Taitu favorites like “It Dread” from Johnny Clarke and “This Feeling” have also been added, as well as the latest bangers from King Earthquake, “Thy Kingdom Come”  by Fred Locks and “Born A Fighter” by Prince Alla.

Taitu Records Introduces WAV + MP3 Downloads

April 9, 2012

Taitu Records began as a vinyl-only label and we firmly believe in maintaining that foundation. However, in 2012 we cannot ignore that digital files are the dominant medium, and not everyone is lucky enough to own a turntable. Furthermore, vinyl pressing + shipping costs keep rising, so record prices are out-of-reach for many people’s budgets. We need the world to be able to afford to take in the music.

Therefore, we are pleased to announce we are now moving into the digital realm by offering high quality WAV and MP3 downloads fit for sound system and hi-fi play. MP3′s are 320kbps, and WAV are 16-bit. We decided to start out with 2 out-of-print 10″s on the label we get asked about a lot . The stampers for both of those 10″s broke during the second run of 500, so there are no vinyl represses in sight. To keep the music available, we have released TR1005: “War In The Garrison” – Yami Bolo b/w “No Pull Over” – Cologne and TR1004: “Dreader Than Dread” – Linval Thompson b/w “Some A Dem” – Prince Alla.  They are available as individual tracks or full EP’s with discounts for EP downloads. At the time of this post, these are the only authorized downloads of Taitu Records music – direct from the source. If you see any elsewhere, they are not legitimate and may contain malware.

We will continue to press vinyl and we will continue to release downloads. There is much more to come! Stay tuned to our store or feel free to get in touch or join our mailing list. Give thanks to one and all for your support!
